So there I was selling bikinis out of my truck in South Beach Miami, getting ready to kick off a wet t-shirt contest when the worldโs biggest grouch approached me – Keller Fitzwilliam.
The man had the sultriest British accent I’ve ever heard. And he looked like he just walked off a Viking boat and into a suit tailored specifically for his impressively muscular frame. Only problem is, he had the warmth of an ice pick and he kept telling me he was here to take me back to his home country.
Of course, I didn’t follow him. I might be up for a good time, but I’m also educated enough to know leaving with a stranger isn’t smart. Well, that’s until he mentioned my mom’s name. My mom who passed away several years ago.
So after some serious fact-checking, my bikini-clad bum went with him to a sub-arctic country I had never heard of just north of the British Isles, where I found out my grandpa was the king of said freezing country, and I was the one and only heir.
Desperate to learn more about my mom, I decided to give this princess thing a chance.
Good idea, right? Wrong.
Because Mr. Ice Pick was put to the task of training me and heโs not just cold as ice, heโs pompous, aggravating, and possessive. And did I mention we have to share a bathroom in a tiny castle?
We are oil and water every single day and even though heโs training me to be queen, I have this simmering desire to kneel before him.
My Review
Royally Not Ready by Meghan Quinn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
In this modern and spicy fairy tale of a romance by Meghan Quinn, Keller Fitzwilliam is entrusted by the King of Torskethorpe in finding the King’s American granddaughter and training her to be the next sovereign.
Lilly lost her parents in a terrible boating accident when she was seventeen, ten years later she has no family and no knowledge of her Mom’s royal roots. Lilly lives in Miami and has a “bikini truck” with her best friend, Timmy. Lilly is pretty foul-mouthed and feisty and when Keller comes to get her at the request of the King, she drives him nuts.
After a leak to the gossip magazines about her existence, Keller and Lilly are forced to hide out in an uninhabited castle far from the King and Queen while she does her royal training. When they arrive they find that the “castle” is barely fit for habitation.
Keller doesn’t have a lot of faith that Lilly will be able to learn everything she needs to learn. He has to succeed for his country and King Theo or the country may be taken over by the neighboring country of Arkham.
King Theo tells Lilly that he’ll give her two months to decide whether she will stay.
Keller and Lilly are attracted to one another after only a couple of days but they fight it. You have to suspend your disbelief for this story. From the tiny royal island nation (somewhere between Scandinavia and England) to the American heiress and her wet t-shirt contests to the tension between Lilly and Keller even though they are supposedly putting the country at risk. The tension is really delicious though.
We start getting to know Lilly and Keller and Keller is the perfect mix of romance and alpha-male. He writes poetry, carves, he misses his parents and has a truckload of honor. They both lost their parents in horrible accidents and this shared tragedy brings them together. They start to actually like each other and respect one another and they don’t know what to do about it.
I grew to love this couple. I loved how they both changed for one another in subtle and not so subtle ways. Lilly, most noticeably, changes into someone fit for a crown and to be the head of a country. I also love a good grovel and Keller was very very good at it.
Royally Not Ready feels like a mix of The Princess Diaries, My Fair Lady and Meghan Quinn’s signature humor and spice. This enemies to lovers romance was really fun and gratifying.
