Best Romance Novels of 2021

What a great year in romance! We all know that romance is the leader in genre fiction (yes, it IS! The Times of London!), it makes millions for the publishing industry every year and we still fight for every speck of respect the genre richly deserves. So, we honor the triumphs of the past year: here are my favorite romance book releases of 2021; my list of the best romance novels of the year. If you haven’t read these five star gems yet, please give them a try and maybe you will find your happily reading ever after.

People We Meet On Vacation

Quote: “When Iโ€™m happy, you make me so much happier. I still have a lot to figure out, but the one thing I know is, wherever you are, thatโ€™s where I belong. Iโ€™ll never belong anywhere like I belong with you. No matter what Iโ€™m feeling, I want you next to me. Youโ€™re home to me, Alex. And I think Iโ€™m that for you too.”

My Review: Emily Henry has written a perfect romance. Poppy and Alex meet at college orientation and don’t really make much of an impression on one another but end up car pooling home to Ohio after school ends. This leads to years of summer trips and a deep and abiding friendship. This homage to When Harry Met Sally is just so beautiful. It’s funny and real and emotional. I highly recommend it.

Synopsis:

Poppy and Alex. Alex and Poppy. They have nothing in common. Sheโ€™s a wild child; he wears khakis. She has insatiable wanderlust; he prefers to stay home with a book. And somehow, ever since a fateful car share home from college many years ago, they are the very best of friends. For most of the year they live far apartโ€”sheโ€™s in New York City, and heโ€™s in their small hometownโ€”but every summer, for a decade, they have taken one glorious week of vacation together.

Until two years ago, when they ruined everything. They havenโ€™t spoken since.

Poppy has everything she should want, but sheโ€™s stuck in a rut. When someone asks when she was last truly happy, she knows, without a doubt, it was on that ill-fated, final trip with Alex. And so, she decides to convince her best friend to take one more vacation togetherโ€”lay everything on the table, make it all right. Miraculously, he agrees.

Now she has a week to fix everything. If only she can get around the one big truth that has always stood quietly in the middle of their seemingly perfect relationship. What could possibly go wrong?

Ever After Always

Best Romance Novels of 2021

Quote: โ€We canโ€™t possible hope to always live โ€˜happilyโ€™. But โ€˜ever afterโ€™? That we can hope for and choose. Because โ€˜ever afterโ€™ isnโ€™t an idea. Itโ€™s a personโ€”an imperfect person whoโ€™s perfect for you.โ€ Her eyes search mine as she gives me one soft, tender kiss.
โ€œYouโ€™re that person, for me. Youโ€™re my ever after.โ€

My Review: In Ever After Always, above all, Chloe Liese honours the honesty, vulnerability and work that goes into maintaining the love of oneself and one another in marriage. Ever After Always is a beautiful portrayal of marriage and family and the loving ties that bind that cannot be missed. Read full review here.

Synopsis:

Buckle up for an emotional journey of hijinks, heartache, and a hot slow-burn in this marriage-in-crisis romance about going the distance to make love last.

EVER AFTER ALWAYS is a marriage-in-crisis, opposites-attract romance about a sensitive, fierce-loving woman and her resilient husband who has anxiety disorder. Complete with island vacation antics, a sibling prank gone wrong, and a steamy slow burn, this standalone is the third in a series of novels about a Swedish-American family of five brothers, two sisters, and their wild adventures as they each find happily ever after.

Love At First

Best Romance Novels of 2021

Quote: โ€œYou don’t have to love people the way you learned to love at first.โ€

My Review: I truly loved this expertly crafted book. Itโ€™s a must read for me. โ€œLove At Firstโ€ nourishes your heart and soul as Will and Nora learn that you donโ€™t have to love in the manner that you learned to love at first. Read full review here.

Synopsis:

Sixteen years ago, a teenaged Will Sterling sawโ€”or rather, heardโ€”the girl of his dreams. Standing beneath an apartment building balcony, he shared a perfect moment with a lovely, warm-voiced stranger. Itโ€™s a memory thatโ€™s never faded, though heโ€™s put so much of his past behind him. Now an unexpected inheritance has brought Will back to that same address, where he plans to offload his new property and get back to his regular life as an overworked doctor. Instead, he encounters a woman, two balconies above, whoโ€™s uncannily familiar…

No matter how surprised Nora Clarke is by her reaction to handsome, curious Will, or the whispered pre-dawn conversations they share, she wonโ€™t let his plans ruin her quirky, close-knit building. Bound by her loyalty to her adored grandmother, she sets out to foil his efforts with a little light sabotage. But beneath the surface of their feud is an undeniable connection. A balcony, a star-crossed couple, a fateful meetingโ€”maybe itโ€™s the kind of story that can’t work out in the end. Or maybe, itโ€™s the perfect second chance…

A sparkling and tender novel from the acclaimed author of Love Lettering, full of bickering neighbors, surprise reunions, and the mysterious power of love that fans of Christina Lauren, Sarah Hogle, and Emily Henry will adore.

Marriage and Murder

Quote: โ€œWhen I saw Jenn, I saw all of her, all versions of her, and all our history, and all the wondrous and frightening possibilities of our future.โ€

My Review: โ€œMarriage and Murderโ€ is pure magic, combining the complexities of a truly exceptional mystery with the heart and charm of a great, steamy romance. Iโ€™m giving all the stars to Penny Reid for creating this wonder of a book. Read full review here.

Synopsis:

The Devil is in the details . . .

Cletus Byron Winston wishes to marry Jennifer Anne Donner-Sylvester (aka The Banana Cake Queen) posthaste! Heโ€™s spent the last year wanting nothing more than for the celebrations to be brief, libations flowing, and BYOB (bring your own blueberries). His future mother-in-law has other plans, plans his intended has been willing to indulge, much to Cletusโ€™s chagrin. Therefore, so must he. To a point. But truth be told, he wouldnโ€™t mind if the meddlesome matriarch disappeared, at least until the nuptials are over.

Or will murder and mayhem derail their happily-ever-after?
And most importantly, who done it?

Accidentally Engaged

Best Romance Novels of 2021

My Review: Farah Heron has created such real complex wonderful characters in this book. Everything is perfect. From the engaging opening to the romance, the dialogue, to the climax that grabs you. I highly recommend this light refreshingly fun read. Note: this is a closed door romance.

Synopsis: Reena Manji doesnโ€™t love her career, her single status, and most of all, her family inserting themselves into every detail of her life. But when caring for her precious sourdough starters, Reena can drown it all out. At least until her father moves his newest employee across the hall–with hopes that Reena will marry him.

But Nadimโ€™s not like the other Muslim bachelors-du-jour that her parents have dug up. If the Captain America body and the British accent werenโ€™t enough, the man appears to love eating her bread creations as much as she loves making them. She sure as hell would never marry a man who works for her father, but friendship with a neighbor is okay, right? And when Reenaโ€™s career takes a nosedive, Nadim happily agrees to fake an engagement so they can enter a couples video cooking contest to win the artisan bread course of her dreams.

As cooking at home together brings them closer, things turn physical, but Reena isnโ€™t worried. She knows Nadim is keeping secrets, but itโ€™s fineโ€” secrets are always on the menu where her family is concerned. And her heart is protectedโ€ฆ sheโ€™s not marrying the man. But even secrets kept for self preservation have a way of getting out, especially when meddling parents and gossiping families are involved.

The Spanish Love Deception

Best Romances of 2021

Quote: โ€œBecause when I finally take those lips in mine, it will be the furthest thing from pretending. I will not be showing you what it would be like if you were mine. Iโ€™ll show you what it is. And I sure as hell wonโ€™t be showing how good I could make you feel if you called me yours. Youโ€™ll already know that I am.โ€

My Review: What can I say about this amazing debut novel? It’s so perfect! A seemingly grumpy co-worker named Aaron pushes all of Lina ‘s buttons but agrees to fake being her boyfriend at her sister’s wedding in Spain. It’s slow burn, sensual and emotional. I absolutely loved this book! Highly recommend.

Synopsis:

Catalina Martรญn, finally, not single. Her family is happy to announce that she will bring her American boyfriend to her sisterโ€™s wedding. Everyone is invited to come and witness the most magical event of the year.

That would certainly be tomorrowโ€™s headline in the local newspaper of the small Spanish town I came from. Or the epitaph on my tombstone, seeing the turn my life had taken in the span of a phone call.

Four weeks wasnโ€™t a lot of time to find someone willing to cross the Atlanticโ€“from NYC and all the way to Spainโ€“for a wedding. Let alone, someone eager to play along my charade. But that didnโ€™t mean I was desperate enough to bring the 6โ€™4 blue eyed pain in my ass standing before me.

Aaron Blackford. The man whose main occupation was making my blood boil had just offered himself to be my date. Right after inserting his nose in my business, calling me delusional, and calling himself my best option. See? Outrageous. Aggravating. Blood boiling. And much to my total despair, also right. Which left me with a surly and extra large dilemma in my hands. Was it worth the suffering to bring my colleague and bane of my existence as my fake boyfriend to my sisterโ€™s wedding? Or was I better off coming clean and facing the consequences of my panic induced lie?

Like my abuela would say, que dios nos pille confesados.

Flirting With Forever

Best Romance Novels of 2021

Quote: โ€œI think youโ€™re the most beautiful person Iโ€™ve ever met, and it has very little to do with clothes or makeup or whatever. Itโ€™s you, Mary. Itโ€™s your whole thing that you have going on. Thatโ€™s the best I can describe it. It doesnโ€™t have anything to do with age. I donโ€™t want to date a twenty-five-year-old. Not even the twenty-five-year-old version of you. I want you, as you are right in this moment. With the sum of all your experiences making you who you are. I wouldnโ€™t shave a single day off your life. This is who you are. And you are what I want.โ€

My Review: Mary and John are set up on a date by John ‘s mother but he immediately gets off on the wrong foot when he refers to her age. Eventually they become friends all the while they both want more and think the other isn’t attracted to them. It’s a beautiful slow burn romance with steam. It’s so wonderfully written by Cara Bastone. I loved these characters and loved spending time with them. A must read!

Synopsis:

Sometimes you get a second chance at a first impression

Mary Trace is bright, bubbly and back in the dating pool in her midthirties. All of her closest friends are in love, and she refuses to miss out on romance. So when a regular customer at her trendy Brooklyn boutique wants to set Mary up on a blind date with her son, she gives a hesitant yes. John Modesto-Whitford is gorgeous and well-groomed, so maybe dinner wonโ€™t be a total bustโ€”until he drops a less-than-flattering comment about Maryโ€™s age.

Desperate to be nothing like his snake of a politician father, public defender John Modesto-Whitford prides himself on his honesty and candor. But his social awkwardness and lack of filter just blew it with the most beautiful woman heโ€™s ever dated.

Luckily, Momโ€™s machinations keep Mary and John running into each other all summer long, and soon they resort to fake dating to get her to back off. When their pretense turns to real friendshipโ€”and some surprisingly hot chemistryโ€”can these two stubborn individuals see past their rocky start to a rock-solid future together?

Make It Sweet

Best Romance Novels of 2021

Quote: “Thing is, the more I get to know you, the more beautiful you are to me.”

My Review: Kristen Callihan has created the perfect balance of sweet and spicy romance. This book is so wonderfully romantic but not over the top. Lucian is a former hockey player who has come to his grandmother’s home of Rosemont to recover and hide away a bit. Emma is an actress who has been written off a famous show and needs a bit of a respite. The two bounce off one another in interesting ways at first, as Lucian secretly woos her with his delicious patisseries. The description of food in this book is swoon-worthy but then so is the slow burn romance between Lucian and Emma. It’s absolutely gorgeous. This has become one of my favourites of 2021!

Synopsis: Life for Emma isnโ€™t good. The world knows her as Princess Anya on Dark Castle, but then her character gets the axeโ€”literally. The cherry on top is finding her boyfriend in bed with another woman. She needs a break, and sanctuary comes in the form of Rosemont, a gorgeous estate in California promising rest and relaxation.

Then she meets the ownerโ€™s equally gorgeous grandson, exโ€“hockey player and current recluse Lucian Osmond, and she sees her own pain and yearning reflected in his eyes.

Heโ€™s charming when he wants to be but also secretive and gruff, with protective walls as thick as Emmaโ€™s own. Despite a growing attraction, they avoid each other.

But then thereโ€™s an impromptu nighttime skinny-dip, and Lucianโ€™s luscious homemade tarts and cream cakes start arriving at Emmaโ€™s door, tempting her to taste life againโ€ฆ

In trying to stay apart, they only grow closerโ€”and their broken pieces just might fit together and make them whole.

Quote: “Anna opened her eyes. She didn’t think she’s ever seen anything so wonderful in her life as the way he looked at her.”

My Review: I absolutely loved this clever, interesting, swoony and steamy look into the film industry. Anna as the 35 year old director to John’s 27 year old screenwriter finds herself in some sexist scenarios due to her conniving ex Tom. I loved the easy friendship and attraction that develops between Anna and John at the bar while talking and the respect they have for one another. This book pulled me in very easily and I finished in one sitting. John and Anna are perfect together.

Synopsis:

After a scorching hot kiss and an awkward meet-second, Anna and John discover theyโ€™ve got a second chance on set.

Anna Kovรกcโ€™s career as a movie director is over if she canโ€™t jumpstart a failing production in Rome: a B-movie thatโ€™s over budget and behind schedule. Sheโ€™s thirty-five years old, her best picture is ten years behind her, and her ex-husband, a powerful Hollywood agent, is still meddling in her career.

John Mills canโ€™t get an agent to listen to his screenplay pitch, because theyโ€™re too busy casting him as Shirtless Werewolf Number Three. His part-time jobs are barely enough to pay his rent, and heโ€™s done being thought of as nothing but a pretty face, by the industry and his dates.

On location in Rome complications abound on-set, but with each disaster that Anna and John overcome together, their burgeoning friendship develops into a not-to-be-denied attraction. Annaโ€™s insecurities about being with John resurface when the press ridicules her for having an on-set fling with a younger man, showing John first-hand the harassment she has to deal with in her job. And John didn’t realize exactly what kind of a devil he made a deal with when he took this job from a powerful agent, none other than Annaโ€™s ex-husband out for revenge.

The two must find a way to navigate the rocky terrain of dating a coworker in an already tumultuous industry or lose their careers and their chance at a happily ever after.

Act Your Age, Eve Brown

Synopsis:

Eve Brown is a certified hot mess. No matter how hard she strives to do right, her life always goes horribly wrongโ€”so sheโ€™s given up trying. But when her personal brand of chaos ruins an expensive wedding (someone had to liberate those poor doves), her parents draw the line. It’s time for Eve to grow up and prove herselfโ€”even though she’s not entirely sure howโ€ฆ

Jacob Wayne is in control. Always. The bed and breakfast ownerโ€™s on a mission to dominate the hospitality industryโ€”and he expects nothing less than perfection. So when a purple-haired tornado of a woman turns up out of the blue to interview for his open chef position, he tells her the brutal truth: not a chance in hell. Then she hits him with her carโ€”supposedly by accident. Yeah, right.

Now his arm is broken, his B&B is understaffed, and the dangerously unpredictable Eve is fluttering around, trying to help. Before long, sheโ€™s infiltrated his work, his kitchenโ€”and his spare bedroom. Jacob hates everything about it. Or rather, he should. Sunny, chaotic Eve is his natural-born nemesis, but the longer these two enemies spend in close quarters, the more their animosity turns into something else. Like Eve, the heat between them is impossible to ignoreโ€”and itโ€™s melting Jacobโ€™s frosty exterior.

From The Embers

Quote: โ€œBeing in love with Eason Maxwell was the easiest thing Iโ€™d ever done. Iโ€™d spent so many years trying to build the perfect life with the perfect husband, the perfect kids, and the perfect company. But mastering the perception of perfect isnโ€™t the same as finding genuine happiness.โ€

Synopsis:

In the aftermath of tragedy, itโ€™s strange the things you remember.
The deafening boom as the house exploded.
The paralyzing fear as I searched for my wife.
The blinding smoke burning my eyes as I carried her out.

But carved into my soul for the rest of my days would be the earth-shattering realization that the woman in my arms wasnโ€™t my wife.

Bree and I were the only survivorsโ€”not that either of us were truly living after that night. As a single dad with nowhere else to go, I moved into her guest house. And somehow, through the guilt and grief, we forged an unlikely team.

It took years, but I watched the gradual return of her smileโ€”slow and life-altering.
The two of us could sit outside for hours, talking about nothing, and it filled the massive hole in my chest with new life.

I may have carried her out of that fire, but the truth was, Bree saved me.

As we healed, the secrets and lies of the past smoldered in the ashes, threatening to ignite again.

Our love was born from the embers, and together we would go up in flames.

The Mixtape

Quote: โ€œAsk me to be yours, and Iโ€™ll be yours. If you let me stay, Iโ€™ll stay forever.โ€

My Review: “Everyoneโ€™s life story is a mixtape, and each track is a chapter of their life. Some chapters are happy, and others are sad, but they are all entangled to create that personโ€™s mixtape.โ€ What a great concept. What a fantastic book. It’s angsty and romantic. I loved the vulnerability and depth of both main characters and the focus on mental health. This book left a real impression on me. It’s dual POV, with two short steamy scenes. Lots of emotions! Bring your outrage and tissues. Wow!

Synopsis: Since the death of his twin brother, Oliverโ€™s caught between pleasing his fans and finding himself. Emery finds him first.

Emery has never felt more alone. Raising her daughter is both her pleasure and her pain as she struggles to hold on to her job as a bartender and keep a roof over their heads. With no one to help themโ€”no support systemโ€”any unexpected expense or late bill could turn their whole world upside down.

Reeling from the death of his twin brother and bandmate, rock star Oliver Smith is trying to drink his problems away. Apparently he isnโ€™t very good at it; they follow him wherever he goes. Also in hot pursuit are the paparazzi, who catch Oliver at his lowest low.

He could have walked into any bar in California, but he walked into hers. Emery helps Oliver lose the crowd, and they find themselves alone: two people whose paths are marked with loss and pain. However, they hold an unshakable hope for healing. They find solace together, but can their love withstand the world?

Reel

Quote: “Ours is a love so much richer and deeper than anything I could have dreamt or imagined, girded with trust and burning with passion.”

My Review: Reel captures you from the first page. It is an immersive and lush experience as well as emotionally captivating. Neevah and Canon ‘s love story is so beautiful and tender and steamy and real. I can’t say enough good things about this book. Just read it!

Synopsis:

One moment in the spotlight.

For months I stood by, an understudy waiting in the wings, preparing for my time to shine.
I never imagined he would watch in the audience that night.
Canon Holt.
Famous film director.
Fascinating. Talented. Fine.
Before I could catch my breath, everything changed.
I went from backstage Broadway to center stage Hollywood.
From being unknown, to my name, Neevah Saint, on everyoneโ€™s lips.
Canon casts me in a star-studded Harlem Renaissance biopic, catapulting me into another stratosphere.

But stars shine brightest in the dead of night.
Forbidden attraction, scandal and circumstances beyond my control jeopardize my dream.
Could this one shotโ€”the role of a lifetime, the love of a lifetimeโ€”cost me everything?

Totally Folked

Quote: โ€œFolks around here, they get an idea in their head, and itโ€™s hard to modify it. Someone who sleeps around might be an honorable, respectable person, but it doesnโ€™t matter. Thatโ€™s all people see. Itโ€™s just as hard to alter an idea as it is a first impression.โ€

My Review: Penny Reid has created a tender and magical romance with incredible chemistry that is perfectly hot and steamy just in time for these mid-Summer nights. Readers will fall in love with Jackson and Raquel in the first of the Good Folk series. Read full review here.

Synopsis:

Jackson James follows the rules. He has to. Heโ€™s a sheriffโ€™s deputy in a super small town with a super big personality. However, strict adherence to the law during the day has been enjoyably balanced by rakish rules at night. Jackson, typically happy to protect and serve (and serve, and serve), starts questioning the value of wayward evenings when getting laid starts to feel more like being waylaid. Could it be that Green Valleyโ€™s most eligibleโ€”and notoriousโ€”bachelor longs for something (and someone) real?

Mega movie star Raquel Ezra follows only one rule: always leave them wanting more. Studio execs, reporters, audiences, fans, loversโ€”no one can get enough of the smart, savvy, and sexy bombshell. But when โ€œgenerous offersโ€ begin to feel more like excessive demands, years of always leaving has the elusive starlet longing for something (and perhaps someone) lasting.

When Raquel abruptly returns to the quirky Tennessee hamlet, her path crosses with the delectable deputy with whom she spent one unforgettable night. Unfortunately, scandal and intrigue soon follow. Raquel and Jackson must decide which is more important: following their rules? Or, at long last, finding something real.

The Lie

Best Romance Novels of 2021

Quote: โ€œIn an instant, I had the bone deep certainty that when we kissed, sheโ€™d rock me to my core.โ€

My Review: The Washington Wolves are that fictional team that is almost the American equivalent of Ted Lassoโ€™s (other kind of football team) in their sense of family, the values they have, and their love for one another.

โ€œThe Lieโ€ will sweep you up in its romance and maybe make you cry a little bit. Itโ€™s a gorgeous story and I highly recommend it. Read full review here.

Synopsis:

Rule number 1 for the team ownerโ€™s daughter? Donโ€™t date the players.

Especially not hotheaded tight ends with tattoos and impulse control problems.

Thatโ€™s why Dominic Walker is completely off my radar. Sort of.

Babysitting the team troublemaker when heโ€™s forced to volunteer for the foundation where I work means I canโ€™t exactly avoid him.

I wish I had though. Because once I get to know Dominic, itโ€™s almost impossible to ignore the feelings he brings out in me.

Pretty soon, Iโ€™m breaking all my rules. I just have to hope he doesnโ€™t break my heart in the process.

It Happened One Summer

Quote: “Sheโ€™d thought nothing could make her feel sexier than a pair of Louboutins, but this man building her something by hand not only turned her on, it made her feel coveted. Wanted. In a way that wasnโ€™t superficial, but durable. So. That was terrifying.”

Synopsis:

Piper Bellinger is fashionable, influential, and her reputation as a wild child means the paparazzi are constantly on her heels. When too much champagne and an out-of-control rooftop party lands Piper in the slammer, her stepfather decides enough is enough. So he cuts her off, and sends Piper and her sister to learn some responsibility running their late fatherโ€™s dive bar… in Washington.

Piper hasnโ€™t even been in Westport for five minutes when she meets big, bearded sea captain Brendan, who thinks she wonโ€™t last a week outside of Beverly Hills. So what if Piper canโ€™t do math, and the idea of sleeping in a shabby apartment with bunk beds gives her hives. How bad could it really be? Sheโ€™s determined to show her stepfatherโ€”and the hot, grumpy localโ€”that sheโ€™s more than a pretty face.

Except itโ€™s a small town and everywhere she turns, she bumps into Brendan. The fun-loving socialite and the gruff fisherman are polar opposites, but thereโ€™s an undeniable attraction simmering between them. Piper doesnโ€™t want any distractions, especially feelings for a man who sails off into the sunset for weeks at a time. Yet as she reconnects with her past and begins to feel at home in Westport, Piper starts to wonder if the cold, glamorous life she knew is what she truly wants. LA is calling her name, but Brendanโ€”and this town full of memoriesโ€”may have already caught her heart.

With You Forever

Best Romance Novels of 2021

Quote: “Her eyes meet mine, and that moments feels like a new color, brushed across my heart’s canvas. One that I never even dreamed could grace my life, because I didn’t know it existed.”

My Review: This is a gently paced yet steamy romance that reassures us that no matter what insecurities or vulnerabilities we face we all deserve to be accepted, safe and loved for who we really are. I highly recommend โ€œWith You Foreverโ€, a stunning romance that reminds us to our core of the meaning of bravery, family and love. Read full review here.

Synopsis:

Cozy up for a heartfelt, humorous, sizzling slow-burn in this marriage of convenience romance about finding loveโ€”and homeโ€”in the most unlikely of places.โ€‹

Axel

Rooney Sullivan is sunshine incarnate. Warm, bright, always smiling, sheโ€™s everything Iโ€™m not and the last person I have any business desiring. Desperate to hide a hopeless attraction, Iโ€™ve done everything possible to keep my distance…until a charades game gone wrong brought that to a grinding halt.

Since then, steering clear of Rooney has been impossible. In a matter of months, sheโ€™s kissed me speechless, commandeered my art career, and infiltrated not only my dreams but my home. The woman who was once avoidable has become the last thing I needed: temptingly within reach.

Rooney

Axel Bergman is a gorgeous grump who doesnโ€™t have the time of day for me. Thankfully, Iโ€™ve kept my crush under wraps…well, until I kissed him. Charades got away from me, okay? It was an accident! I havenโ€™t seen him since, which is for the best. My life is a mess, and the last thing I need is to embarrass myself further with the man who avoids me like thatโ€™s his job rather than painting modern masterpieces.

It seems the universe, however, has a different plan. When Axel and I unexpectedly find our pathsโ€”and problemsโ€”converging, a marriage of convenience proves the perfect solution. At least, until Iโ€™m facing my most serious problem yet: a once-loveless marriage of convenience thatโ€™s inconveniently become a love match, after all.

All The Feels

Quote: “It was his turn to leap for her, because she deserved it. She deserved everything.”

My Review: I love Olivia Dade! This book is at once hilarious and poignant. Alex will forever be one of my favourite MMCs. I loved Lauren and the Big Harpy Energy she finally finds. I loved the ADHD representation. I’m just flailing with love for this delicious book.

Synopsis: Alexander Woodroe has it all. Charm. Sex appeal. Wealth. Fame. A starring role as Cupid on TVโ€™s biggest show, God of the Gates. But the showrunners have wrecked his character, heโ€™s dogged by old demons, and his post-show future remains uncertain. When all that reckless emotion explodes into a bar fight, the tabloids and public agree: his star is falling.

Enter Lauren Clegg, the former ER therapist hired to keep him in line. Compared to her previous work, watching over handsome but impulsive Alex shouldnโ€™t be especially difficult. But the more time they spend together, the harder it gets to keep her professional remove and her heart intact, especially when she discovers the reasons behind his recklessnessโ€ฆnot to mention his Cupid fanfiction habit.

When another scandal lands Alex in major hot water and costs Lauren her job, sheโ€™ll have to choose between protecting him and offering him what he really wantsโ€”her. But heโ€™s determined to keep his improbably short, impossibly stubborn, and extremely endearing minder in his life any way he can. And on a road trip up the California coast together, he intends to show her exactly what a falling star will do to catch the woman he loves: anything at all.

Before and After You

Best Romance Novels of 2021

Quote: โ€œYouโ€™ll let in all the things I feel for you. Youโ€™ll welcome my admiration and adoration and devotion. Youโ€™ll let yourself sit with the knowledge that nobody will ever love you the way I love you, with the same absorption and intensity and surety. Youโ€™ll just let me love you. And then one day youโ€™ll look around,โ€ he continued, tracing the whorl of my navel, โ€œand realize there are no more shadows, no more ghosts from the past. Just you and me. And all the wonderful things in store for us in the future.โ€

Synopsis:

Window Shopping

Quote: โ€œDo you want some proof I can be more than a nice guy, sweetheart?โ€

My Review: This grumpy x sunshine romance is heartwarming and steamy. It made me cry happy tears and crave some cocoa. Now I’m ready for the holidays.

Synopsis:

Two weeks before Christmas and all through Manhattan, shop windows are decorated in red and green satin.
I’m standing alone in front of the famous Vivant department store, when a charming man named Aiden asks my opinion of the dรฉcor.

It’s a tragedy in tinsel, I say, unable to lie.
He asks for a better idea with a twinkle in his eye.
Did I know he owned the place? No. He put me on the spot.
Now I’m working for that man, trying to ignore that he’s hot.
But as a down on her luck girl with a difficult past, I know an opportunity when I see oneโ€”and I have to make it last.

I’ll put my heart and soul into dressing his holiday windows.
I’ll work without stopping. And when we lose the battle with temptation, I’ll try and remember I’m just window shopping.

The Mistletoe Motive

Quote: โ€œI just think itโ€™ll be pretty damn impossible not to love the holidays just a little, now that I get to share them with you.โ€

My Review: Liese accomplishes this turn from loathing to loving in an incredibly graceful way allowing the reader insight into the realities of neurodivergence and Type 1 Diabetes. She also gives us profoundly intimate and quiet glimpses into Gabbyโ€™s and Jonathanโ€™s hearts. Read full view here.

Synopsis:

From the author of THE BERGMAN BROTHERS series comes a slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers holiday romance, perfect for fans of THE HATING GAME and YOU’VE GOT MAIL.

He loathes the holidays. She loves them. Sheโ€™s full of festive cheer. Heโ€™s brimming with Bah, Humbugs. Besides unreasonably seasonable names, the only thing Jonathan Frost and Gabriella Di Natale have in common is a healthy dose of mutual contempt. Well, that and the same place of employment at the cityโ€™s most beloved independent bookstore, Baileyโ€™s Bookshop. But when the storeโ€™s owners confess its dire financial state, Jonathan and Gabby discover another unfortunate commonality: the imminent threat of unemployment.

With the Baileysโ€™ requests to minimize expenses, win new customers, and make record sales dancing in their heads, Jonathan and Gabby concludeโ€”barring a financial Christmas miracleโ€”one of them will soon be cut from the payroll. Neither are willing to step down from their position, so they strike a bargain: whoever has more sales in December gets to stay on in the new year; the loser will resign. With a lifetime’s worth of festive tricks up her sleeve, Gabby should easily outsell her nemesis, except the unreadable Mr. Frostโ€™s every move seems purely designed to throw her off her game.

As if that wasnโ€™t bad enough, Gabby’s deceptive ex won’t quit pursuing her, and her anonymous online friend suggests they take a break. Worst of all, as the pressure mounts to save the bookshop and her job, Gabby meets a new, tender side of Jonathan. Is this the same man she’s called her cold-hearted enemy?

Maybe heโ€™s got a motive she just canโ€™t figure outโ€”or maybe Jonathan Frost isnโ€™t as chilly as she once thought. Maybe Jonathan and Gabby already knowโ€”and loveโ€”each other in ways they never thought possible.

I would honestly read all of these again. I hope I can! I hope you get the chance to read them as well. These are my picks for the best romance novels of 2021.
