“Back in the Burbs” by Avery Flynn and Tracy Wolff is a great romantic comedy
โBack in the Burbsโ is an enemies-to-friends-to-lovers romantic comedy that you wonโt be able to put down.
What you need to know about โBack in the Burbsโ:
โ Enemies to Lovers
โ First Person Narration by Mallory
โ Romantic Comedy
โ Lots of secrets in the suburbs
โ Hot grumpy neighbor Nick
โ Mallory who is in the middle of a divorce
โ Complete Standalone
Several years ago I suddenly found myself the inheritor of my late uncleโs house. I came to discover that he was a hoarder. So, in a matter of a couple of days, I moved my entire life from my cool little apartment in a trendy neighborhood in the city to several acres in an unfamiliar and loaded-with-stuff house in the country. All this is to say: this book gave me flashbacks!
In โBack in the Burbsโ, Mallory inherits her Aunt Maggieโs home in the New Jersey suburbs which has eleventy billion HOA violations, is filled to the brim with EVERYTHING and on which she will have to pay a sizeable inheritance tax in a few months. Her parents encourage her to sell her Auntโs legacy but because Mallory is in the middle of a terrible divorce, has lost everything: including her job and home, she decides not to sell.
In addition, Mallory has a grumpy new neighbour named Nick who sets off sparks every time he comes near and her unsupportive parents want her to go back to her cheating husband.
Malloryโs life is a mess. Sheโs tired of being the doormat she was with her soon-to-be ex, Karl, and wants to live like her fun and freewheeling Aunt Maggie.
The more Mallory gets to know Nick, the less grumpy he seems and the more he helps her out. But her life just keeps getting more and more complicated.
Mallory vowed she would never need another man but is that a promise she can really keep?
I loved all the relationships in this book. They were complicated, real and messy. They took time and work to build but they were ultimately so worth it.
Mallory is such a great character. She is overwhelmed and having to deal with a lot of change, the emotional fall-out of her marriage and with the disappointment of her parents. She really steps up and becomes empowered and handles almost everything even while freaking out.
Nick is a dream guy. I just fell for him from the start. His (at first) grumpy exterior covers this cinnamon roll hero who is there for everyone. (sigh) I loved his HOA boss, neat-as-a-pin, rule follower falling for the free spirit, mess-in-progress that is Mallory.
I didnโt want this book to end! I enjoyed these characters too much! Avery Flynn and Tracy Wolff work seamlessly together to create an empowering, cheerful, hug of a book with a romance that is sweet, hot and probably violates several HOA regulations.
